MY BASSET HOUND STINKS!: SOME REAL SOLUTIONS

THE WORD STINKY OFTEN SUMS IT UP

We adopted a Basset Hound approximately 5 years ago from the Mid-Atlantic Basset Rescue located in the Tri-State area [NY, NJ and Connecticut]. In December of 2010 we left the East Coast by car to live on the West Coast of the United States. We drove across country with Lester [Basset] and Hazel [Chihuahua], in the back seat of our car. We put many miles on our car and totaled up many comments and stories about Basset Hounds from people we met along the way. Next to the Basset Hound’s limitless appetite, the second most heard comment and question had to be about the smell they can give off. “Yours smells so good, what do you do? Ours stinks and no bathing seems to have a lasting effect.”

WHERE IS THAT SMELL COMING FROM?

When bathing your basset does not work, or only resolves the problem for a short period of time the problem is internal. The fact that we find this surprising is the most concerning for me. It is a superficial approach to resolving body odors in humans, not just in animals. If there is a leak in the ceiling, go upstairs and find out what is causing it. Putting down a bucket to catch the water or plastering the ceiling is not a long term solution.

PS Their ears need to be cleaned regularly, but that is not a solution. What is creating that smell is the real question.

WHAT TO DO?

What I am writing here applies to all dogs, not just the beloved Basset Hound.

Dogs need fresh food. Canned and dry food in a bag is high in ingredients that are often not available in nature. Grasses and greens that are fresh are not found in pre prepared foods. So upgrade the quality of food you feed your dog. Read the labels and buy the best with the least to zero listed chemicals. Add to their food vegetables, grasses and other ingredients that are less acid forming. Organic meat and vegetables are the primary ingredients to look for with a minimum of grains.

Raw meat patties are available in many pet food stores. Do some research and find out the benefits of feeding your dog and cat a raw meet diet. What animal eats cooked meat? Only those kept by humans. Sometimes this is not affordable, so do your best. Vet bills are exceedingly high and, in many situations, outweigh what it costs to feed your pet the best quality possible during their lifetime.

Probiotics can help to  greatly reduce the odor of your dog and cat. Why? Probiotics help create better intestinal flora that enables dogs and cats to digest their food more efficiently and eliminate waste. When the bowels do not move often what results has an effect that we all can smell.

More FILTERED WATER can make a huge difference. Many pet parents under serve their dogs water to reduce the amount of times they need to go outside. This especially true for larger breeds who live in apartment buildings. I am sure this is bad for the dogs kidneys and bladders.  Not enough water makes it impossible for your pet to eliminate toxins from diets high in meat / uric acid. This =’s kidney problems later in life.

Sea Minerals such as kelp are important for ridding environmental toxins from the bodies of  dogs and cats. Toxins that we are all confronted with on our planet.

Green Powders or Dog Super Foods can be added to your dog and cats food. Green Mush by Health Force / Jameth Sheridan Product.

Bones that are made from non synthetic materials need to be used instead of  the heavily treated junk that is abundantly available and not cheap in price. Often know as raw hide { highly treated with chemicals }.

Diatomaceous Earth is a substance to feed your pet to help rid it of parasites. Food grade is what I am  talking about here, not the stuff for swimming pools.

Brushing and washing are important, but need to be done in conjunction with the dietary suggestions above. Find natural shampoos and not the ones with a laundry list of hard to pronounce words that only a pharmacist might understand. Please remember that bathing a dog is not the ultimate solution to this problem!

SOME RESOURCES

As a Postscript 11/2013: Since writing this post I discovered the use of sodium bentonite clay taken internally. It really works for dogs. Since we have been giving it to Lester his odor has diminished to mostly disappeared. The Unique Healing Program Donna Pessin has all the information on her website. All the other things I mentioned in this post are most definitely valid. Adding food grade sodium bentonite to their food is really a great way to absorb the environmental toxins we are  all exposed to.

Whiskers online store for many alternative books, products and other needs click here. If you do not live in the NYC area Whiskers does not make sense to buy many of their products from because of weight and perishability. What you can do is check what they carry, since their quality is really high. When you educate yourself you can educate the pet store in your area.

Diatomaceous Earth click here .

Probiotics for pets. See what Whiskers carries for a reputable brand.

I TRULY RECOMMEND ADOPTING A BASSET HOUND. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, CONTACT SUZANNE FITCH, ORGANIZER OF THE TRI STATE BASETT RESCUE FOR MORE INFORMATION [click here].

Good Luck. The effort to create better health for your Basset hound or any dog breed / mix is well worth the effort. It is also highly cost effective. This is  a very important factor so that people feel they can afford to adopt in the future. Huge vet bills at the end, or during the life of a pet can put people off from adopting again. Forget about the pain of watching their pet suffer.

ORGANIC HAIR SALON PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA

SKILLED HAIR COLOR, CUT AND STYLING WITHOUT THE USE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS

A long time New York City resident, I met John Masters in the early 1980’s through a mutual friend. John educated me about natural hair care. At that time he had just begun developing his product line in his downtown apartment. John is an impeccable hair colorist and stylist.

I moved to Palm Desert and got real lucky. Driving on Highway 111, going west, I saw a sign for Afsaneh’s Organic Hair Color Studio. Truly a mirage in the desert.

ABOUT AFSANEH’S SALON

Afsaneh has a very pretty salon that smelled good, not of toxic chemicals. After having a consultation with Afsaheh, I immediately knew she was way more than competent.  A past owner of salons in the Bay area, there are photos of herself with Hilary Clinton and other celebrities that are impressive. However, in the end it was her skill and kind way that really convinced me. My hair color and cut is something I am really, really pleased with. I also like the products she uses, which have all organic and natural ingredients.

The prices are extremely reasonable. Especially considering the high quality of her work.  The price of a  hairstyle- cut is about $55.00. My highlights were approximately $95.00. In NYC I would be paying three times this amount to get the same kind of quality work.

Anyway, for an all over pleasant, non-toxic [in all respects] experience, I highly recommend having your hair done at Afsaneh’s Organic Hair Color Studio in Palm Desert, California.

A HEALTHY CHIHUAHUA DIET: SOME IDEAS

We adopted a Chihuahua at the age of 3 months who has maintained a great disposition and well socialized personality for the past four years. Many small dogs can be high strung, and as a result bark at the drop of a hat, be snarly and overprotective of their  “owner”. If you have a Chihuahua you  understand the quotation marks.

Most dog behavior has to do with their human counterparts. Small dogs benefit from training and often are not. Owners know that their small pooch can be picked up and put in a bag or carried away if misbehaving. Paper training can lead to little socialization with other dogs. The socialization leads to happy interaction with other pooches. The bottom line: train your dog or it will train you. Dogs take direction whether you realize you are giving it or not.

DIET

This information is for all size dogs, most breeds and mixes.

Feeding a dog dry hard food is not going to make for a relaxed little creature.   A reputable vet told me that dry food is really for the convenience of the owner. Dry food is understandable for the person who does rescue work, and for those who really have no other alternative due to financial reasons. Taste of the Wild is a good quality dry food. I have a link below. I am not suggesting that most canned food is any better than the dried stuff.

Find some way to mix in green vegetables into the food of your dog. Read the ingredients of whatever you are feeding them. If the words on the bag are not ones you understand, don’t buy it.

SOME BASICS FOR FEEDING A SMALL DOG

We use a raw meat source. For one brands information click here . There are some canned foods that are good quality. You have to read the label and compare.

One dry food to investigate is Taste of the Wild click here.  With weather changes as they are today, it is important to have some dry food on hand for emergencies, as part of the diet, and to upgrade what you are using if a raw diet is not possible. IF YOU MUST USE DRY FOOD, CONSIDER SOAKING IT AHEAD OF TIME IN GOOD QUALITY WATER. Chewing dry food does not clean their teeth. Most inhale it.

Add water to your dogs food. Many little dogs do not drink enough water. Filtered water is a must. If you are not drinking filtered or glass bottled, or gathering your own spring water do some research. Importance of filtered water for dogs  click here to start.

Health Force Green Mush click here for a review. I think they have a probiotic in this mixture. If not, Probiotics / prebiotics for dogs is a very good idea. Click here to start some research.

Some kind of Oil Blend or a few drops of olive, flax or some other nutrient rich oil. A twelve pound or less dog needs small amounts on a daily basis. Introduce oil slowly since it can produce loose bowels if too much is given at one time.

Diatomaceous Earth click here. If you do not know what this is the link will help you out.

Rescue Remedy and other flower essences for hyper, traumatized, confused or anxious dogs. To learn more click here. Great for people, too. Dogs are very sensitive to what is going on with their human family.

Teeth need to kept clean. If brushing is a big no at this point, make sure they chew on something. A natural bully stick.  Teeth extractions and cleanings are a fortune and the sedatives that are used by some vets are questionable. There are people that come to the home who do dental cleaning. Do some research.

TOO EXPENSIVE? I UNDERSTAND, BUT…

Pay now or pay later [vet bills and heartbreak]. If money is truly an issue, do the best you can. Read labels and get the best quality food you can for your small dog. They do not really need that much food. Increase the vegetable ratio and be relentless in waiting out the period where they may turn up their nose to wet or raw food.

DRY FOOD IS CRACK FOR DOGS AND THE MANUFACTURES KNOW IT.

This is a basic start to having a more relaxed, easy going little pooch. Their bowels should not be dried up and sparse. If that is the case, that alone could make them snippy and tense!

As a postscript: The Unique Healing Program Donna Pessin is something that I am doing and have placed my dogs on. Her books, videos and website have some info on dogs. Talk to her over the phone and she can give you some guidance.
