THE UNIQUE HEALING PROGRAM DONNA PESSIN: DIGESTING FIBER WITHOUT SCREWING UP YOUR GUT USING BLENDED SALADS

If you are having diarrhea, loose stools or other discomfort that is triggered by eating raw or cooked vegetables, here is an idea for a relatively low fiber salad. The blender breaks the fiber down making it easier to digest and less time consuming than chewing each mouthful until it is liquid. I also make this with steamed vegetables [hot soup] and will post a recipe for that when I have a chance. Not hard to figure out what to do, but glad to spell it out.

Combine in a high powered blender or whatever you have on hand:

Romaine lettuce 4-5 large leaves or less to scope out what you can tolerate, a bit of scallion, tiny bit of garlic, a bit of cilantro [herbs] for some extra flavor, salt, maybe some black pepper, olive oil, a bit of something acid – lemon or apple cider vinegar. I put in a few drops of stevia to taste. To thicken add one quarter to one half of an avocado. Add in 1/4 cup of purified water. Blend and taste to add more seasoning or water. You can add tomato and other things if you can eat them now without having a reaction. Blended salads and smoothies can be way more adventuress, but this is a simple recipe.

The idea is that blending predigests roughage and  some other foods. Still chew each mouthful a few times to mix the ingredients with the chyme in your mouth. DO NOT CHUG THIS. Had to say it. Sure you are probably past that if you are on UHP.

I use a digestive enzyme before eating. I ran that by Donna Pessin when starting the program and she concurred I should continue. I have to say, if she had disagreed I would have continued anyway. I have tried many enzymes over the years. Here are two I am currently using:

Doctor’s Best and HCL by Solaray. These two are relatively inexpensive and they work for me. I have purchased many brands of Systemic and all other kinds of enzymes before finding UHP. If you have suggestions I would be glad to hear and share.

THE UNIQUE HEALING PROGRAM DONNA PESSIN:DIARY OF A COLON THERAPIST

Most people giving health advice do not understand how to deeply heal the digestive system.  In my experience, that is an understatement.  Much of the advice that is given is very simplistic. Drinking green juices, taking herbs and proper food combining is on the high end of information. This is not going to give the vast majority of people, seeking better health, what they need for a complete healing. Complete healing, as I have come to understand it, could take 1 to 5 years. It is possible. For most, it is not an easy path, but one well worth the walk.

During my time as a colon therapist in NYC some of my clients were part of the Raw Food Community. Most of them had inflammation that made it uncomfortable to insert the speculum. After awhile, I began to think that these raw food eaters could not be adhering to the raw food diet and have such symptoms. If their diets were not made up of acid forming foods, why would they be having this problem? Inflammation was something I would see with people eating high carb, refined food diets. Eating a raw food diet without any fruit in it is usually very difficult for people. A raw diet that does not encourage candida [yeast] overgrowth is very challenging. I know, I did this for years.

Looking back, I realize I was not making a truly informed assessment of these raw food clients. I knew that any diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, which is highly cleansing, is going to help unload a huge amount of acidic waste and toxins. Toxins that are stored in the lymph system, organs and every cell of our bodies.  These people were not taking in enough, or anything, to absorb the amount of toxins [aka acids] that were being released into their bowels from their organs,etcetera. Substances like zeolite clay, sodium bentonite and maybe some other kind of clay, that I am not familiar with, is what I am referring to as agents of absorption. Something to capture the toxic matter and escort it out of the body.

IN SUMMARY

If you are a person who has been eating a largely to completely organic raw food, vegan, vegetarian or macro diet and your digestion is still below par, you may want to consider the following:

If gas, bloating and fowl smelling bowels are something you are constantly experiencing you need something to help you absorb these toxins. Colonics and enemas are helpful, but do not get to the upper GI tract. Herbs, probiotics and other ways to manage infectious situations are something else to consider.

Cleansing symptoms that do not clear up are not a good sign. They can come and go and there are so many different reasons why people have these body reactions. Just putting up with them for years, in hopes that they will clear, is not the answer. Bad digestion because of consuming a “cleansing”  organic raw food, vegan, vegetarian, macro diet, is not a sufficient long term plan. Cleansing can happen and not be an obvious distraction. It may take time to get to that place. A healthy digestive system operates without constant monitoring and futzing with.

Our diets will not heal us. Often people feel much better after including more simple -cleanly prepared foods, but long term results are more limited. “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food” was written  before the Industrial Revolution. BTW, I am not saying that has no merit. However, diet alone will not heal  deep seated illnesses for the majority of people in this present world.

The toxins, pollutants, heavy metals in our water, air and earth, ancestral health, drugs given in childhood, where we lived growing up and SO  many more factors determine our health. How long symptoms of poor digestion linger is a red flag. Diet can help alleviate these symptoms, but for many it will not cure and heal their inner terrain.

She is specifically known for her understanding of Candida overgrowth.  Her protocol  is based on diet, kefirs, and fermented vegetables. Important information. I complied with this program for three years and it did not heal my gut. It may heal yours.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE UNIQUE HEALING PROGRAM DONNA PESSIN: THE BEGINNING

I originally heard about Donna Pessin in December of 2012 through a friend, who is a colon therapist in NYC. I began looking at the Unique Healing website and  videos on youtube. I read the first chapter of the Unique Healing book, which is free and available online. I was, at first, an unwilling student of this material, but the source who sent it to me is someone I respect. I did  have an immediate interest in the subject matter. I recognized it could potentially fill in a gap for me in my own search for bowel health.

THE GAP: ABSORPTION AND EXPULSION OF TOXINS

The missing link for me has always been how to harness the toxins that are being loosened up in our bodies.  When eating more raw fruits, vegetables, herbs, superfoods, whole grains, fresh juices, etcetera most people immediately feel better. For however long that goes on, eventually there is  time when the amount of waste that is dredged up can often not exit quickly enough and symptoms result. Symptoms can be skin rashes, weight gain or loss, headaches, acne, joint discomfort, body odor, itching and the list goes on. Past diet, lifestyle, age, ethnicity, sex play a big role in all situations. Making generalizations to answer the how and why of all this truly goes out the window. There is no one answer. It is unique as each of us are.

The other part of this is how to do The Unique Healing Program without  depending on the use of colonics and enemas. I emphasize the use of the word depending since I do feel there is  place for colonics in healing. As a postscript 2/20014: I do think this program can be done without the use of colonics and enemas. The use of higher amounts of clay and magnesium citrate is part of that answer and is featured in The Unique Healing Books.

BENTONITE CLAY

Bentonite clay is one of the major parts of the Unique Healing program. It is the ingredient that helps to “soak up” the toxins that have collected and are causing the uncomfortable symptoms that can be described in many ways, inflammation is one of them.

My first reaction upon reading about the bentonite clay was not positive. I had used Sonne, Ejuva, Rise and Shine, Health Force cleansing systems and did not have good results. They did not come out easily and I just ended up feeling blocked and bloated. I realize now that this was due to other ingredients, psyllium being one, and not the clay. Even with the aid of colonics, I did not feel they were helpful to me. I have known other people who had good experiences with colon cleanses, my husband being one of the them. However, these programs did not heal his digestive wows long term, even with his sugar – refined food free- 90% raw food-low fruit diet, and colon hydrotherapy. He was pretty diligent.

The Unique Healing System utilizes Sodium Bentonite Clay in a completely different way to heal over a much longer period of time. Combined with other separate ingredients, that do not involve laxatives and psyllium. These ingredients help to improve digestion, encourage the repopulation of healthy bacteria in the colon. The results, for me have been quite different. However, this is not a one, two , three month commitment. The Unique Healing Program can take many months, a year and for some much longer. It is a commitment to health and well being that, I believe, can result in the healing of the GI tract and a lifetime of better digestive and whole body health.

DEFINING OURSELVES BY WHAT WE EAT IS NOT A SIGN OF GOOD HEALTH

MOST PEOPLE NEED MORE THAN A HEALTHY DIET TO HEAL AN AILING DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Healing your gut by rebuilding its micro flora will. How to do this has been a mystery I have tried to solve for over thirty years. What I have learned may seem obvious: Poor digestion is one of the major indicators that our gut is weak. An obsessive addiction to food, beverages and drugs to comfort  consciously or unconsciously, is what often stands in the way. Food is a great comfort. How and why we eat, and the quality and frequency of what we consume is the real issue.

WHAT TO DO VS WHAT SOME OF US DO

Some people  stop eating all things that give them indigestion. Sometimes they are told that refraining from these foods and beverages will heal the problem. This is a short term solution. They are often lead to believe their discipline will heal the problem. I do not believe that is the case. What does happen to many, over time, is that their digestion becomes weaker and the choice of what they can eat becomes smaller and smaller. This leads to confusion, anger and social isolation. Many people who think of themselves as healthy are in this category.

Individuals who have indigestion may have one to three foul smelling bowel  movements a day that are not well formed, too hard, have gas are not, from my understanding, in good health. They are “normal” and what some would be content with. Many people do not move their bowels daily or have diarrhea and would be grateful for those one to three unhealthy poops a day. The idea that it is all relative can be a rationalization, especially for gut health.

Talk about rationalizations, another stable trend is to take over the counter and prescriptive medications. This allowspeople to eat all the foods they crave. The same foods that are contributing to these digestive pains. This leads to other more serious illness due to the masking of basic poor digestive symptoms. These people may also become more isolated. How? Well, first you have to acknowledge that poor diet contributes to poor health. That indigestion is the body warning us that we need  to reflect on what we are consuming. Eating fried foods, sugar, alcohol, refined foods everyday will lead to ailments that will eventually limit our activities. What some people call old age is a description of social isolation.

CLEANSING IS NOT HEALING: IT IS PART OF HEALING

Healthier diets do not ultimately heal us. Cleansing does not ultimately heal us. Drugs do not heal us. So what does? Repopulating the digestive tract with enormous amounts of micro flora. Micro flora that has been destroyed through it being exposed to chlorine and other environmental contaminants and medications. The over prescribing of anti-biotic medicine is  such a contributor that it belongs in a category of its own. This is an incomplete list, but I hope you get the idea. If this sounds too simplistic to you please open your mind and investigate the two resources listed below.

It is important to understand that taking probiotics does not feel healthy bacteria to the colon. A healthy body can create healthy bacteria on its own. The probiotics along with other measures help to buffer the acids being released from parasites, poor diet choices, and other toxic elements living in our tissues, blood, etcetera. This is a simplistic explanation of how our body is able to create micro flora and rebuild.

When you hear people in the Raw Food Movement say that they get sick when eating anything other than raw foods ; that they could die from eating a cooked non-vegan meal, please give their words some serious thought. What we eat should make us stronger and more able to live in the world and not in fear of it and food. The micro flora of the intestines should be able to break down and rid the body of toxic substances. Diet alone does not heal, repopulating the intestinal tract. Finding a way to absorb acidity and remove toxins are two ways that do.

Open your mind, open your heart and you will find healing.

ADDICTION RUNS DEEP AND COMES IN MANY FORMS

THE WAY WE DO ONE THING MAY BE THE WAY WE DO EVERYTHING

The  longer I do something the more emotionally invested I am, consciously or unconsciously, in defending that behavior. Creating change happens when I repeatedly feel sick and tired of having the same negative outcome from my actions. Giving up something familiar can bring up feelings that I deem as sad. A wistful feeling about letting go of the old habits and begin making changes.

Resistance to relinquishing the crutches I go to when I am afraid of change prolongs not taking action. Why should I when I can temporarily cushion an emotional ouch with these behaviors and substances?  The main reason, in brief, is the mourning of all the time spent doing something that, in retrospect, looks and feels like it has been a big waste of time. Of course, at the time it did not seem like a waste. Feelings are not based on facts. That is why, past or present, my addictive behaviors do not always make sense.

Entering uncharted territory without people for support is one thing that creates addiction to all kinds of behavior and substances, even the ones that seem healthy. No real replacement for love and support, addictions do temporarily numb the ouch. Unfortunately they often create a bigger ouch in the end.

To give up present behavior consciously or unconsciously can bring up feelings of failure and who wants to feel that? To change and do something different feels  like what I have been doing was wrong and then I may feel sad. Uncomfortable feelings I would seek out to numb or hide with the addictive behavior and substances I  need to let go of. A crazy circle of behavior.

It is easy to call another person who I know will tell me what I want to hear depending on my motivation. To socialize with people who feel similarly, who are open or closed to change. Someone who will  defend my inner argument for staying stuck or moving forward. It can be lonely when there is no support system to help begin healthy behaviors.

Having equity invested in businesses of all kinds can create a huge blind spot for change. Proponents of all kinds alternative health businesses can be appreciated for the information they have shared over the years. They are also people to question and be wary of. Many people have created their identity around a way of eating, drinking and living. One example is the proponents of 100% raw food diets. There are many, many others in different genres of health. This not even touching Allopathic – Western Medical physicians and their counterparts.

Entertaining another way of living is a threat to the personal and business identity of  many health gurus. Admitting to eating  foods that they once deemed as poisonous or destructive is, for many, extremely unlikely. They seem to be the most extreme. The solution:  We all need to develop and trust our own intuition one situation at a time.

THE RAW FOOD DIET: SOCIALLY ISOLATING?

ONE ASPECT OF DIGESTIVE FREEDOM IS THE ABILITY TO MAKE CHOICES AROUND FOOD, AND TO NOT BE MANIPULATED BY OUR ADDICTIONS. A BOTTOM LINE WAY TO BECOME MORE CONFIDENT, PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY, IS TO IMPROVE DIGESTIVE HEALTH.

Not everyone who eats a raw food diet feels socially isolated, but some people do. It is probably one of the major reasons people do not continue eating a 100% raw food diet. Another is the obsessive ideal of maintaining a  100%  raw food diet. Eating an organic raw food diet is sometimes explored  because so many people do not feel well. Often having  tried macrobiotic,  vegetarian and vegan diets they decide to give something more austere a try. The social support for eating 100% raw is very limited.  Forming a community based on what people eat makes sense on paper, but for the majority it  is not practical or desirable.

A strategy that can work for everyone  is to strengthen our digestive systems to process incoming toxins. Also, to  eliminate toxins already present in our bodies. This strategy can lead to living in this world and  making  choices that empower  us. To be able to make food and lifestyle choices and to overcome food addictions is a goal for many people. It may not always be something people manage to prioritize. Often this vision falls by the wayside of everyday life. Completely understandable.

Eating organic foods in their simplest form has many benefits. It feels the best when it is a choice and not a prescription to follow. A prescription that feels like a life sentence. Again, not everyone feels this way. Not everyone will allow themselves to admit to it. However, raw food followers often dread mainstrem social events, family gatherings, traveling becomes difficult. In the end some relationships are severed because of food restrictions and lifestyle differences. This is sad to me and both sides are responsible and suffer. Crazy.

To feel alive and healthy is to make choices based on how we feel. To make choices from the place of addiction is a major cause of failing health. Possessing strong bacterial flora in the intestines is the crux of internal strength. This allows us the freedom to explore the world and not be restricted by the food that may or may not be available. To be able to taste the cuisine of other cultures and not fall ill due to our weak digestion. To not be afraid of food and know that we can make healthy choices in every situation. To easily resume our usual way of eating without addictive cravings. This is one aspect of  biological freedom, this is what happens when our micro flora bank account is far from being overdrawn.

If you are a person who was drawn to the raw food diet and is finding it hard to maintain it, you are not alone. Many raw food proponents promise  digestive wellness without ever clearly defining what that exactly means. I have often read and heard that having a bowel movement after each meal is a sign of digestive health. What is not mentioned is the quality of the elimination. The form, size, color, odor [ or lack of ], and whether it floats or sinks. I imagine people becoming uncomfortable with the mention of all these details that they live with everyday. Ironic.

My experience in giving colonics to people, to myself  and receiving them [since the late 1970’s] has lead me to finding more questions than answers to what constitutes a healthy gut.  I was originally attracted to David Wolfe’s Longevity Now Program because he was questioning why many raw food eaters do not outlive there contemporaries. His program is very informative, but did not specifically pinpoint improving digestive health. For many people following his program would very positively effect their digestion. The LNP  greatly focuses on the over consumption of inorganic calcium and the inability to utilize it. This is a simplification, but in essence fairly accurate.

Donna Gates has been included in  later Longevity Now Conferences. Truth Calkins is another. There information is some that I am familiar with and have utilized. Grateful for their research and hard work, they’ve  educated me. Their work has helped me appreciate the work of Donna Pessin and  The Unique Healing. I feel her program can be right for many people, especially if you have tried  other methods  of improving digestive potency and have not attained digestive freedom.

THE RAW FOOD MOVEMENT: WHAT IS IT? IS THERE ONE?

RAW FOOD MOVEMENT OR BUSINESS MODEL?

Gary Craog, the founder of EFT / Emotional Freedom Technique, has said that in order to know what the market will bear all is needed is a little research. Does product listing of prices of product, product sales  constitute   a movement – diet?  In the market place there are more products being sold that mention the words Raw and Raw Food then ever before. Not just the things that are obviously raw, like fruits and vegetables, but the packaged / dehydrated stuff, the nut butters, supplements, super foods and more. Eating raw foods is  great adjunct to any kind of diet, or as the largest percentage of food intake for many. It is also being sold as a complete way of eating and lifestyle.

To eat only raw foods is not a guaranteed road to better health. It is an indicator of the quality of health of each persons digestion who embarks upon it. What does that mean?  To have some or an increase of  burping, farting, loose bowels, constipation,  hemorrhoids, rectal itching, vaginal itching, ear itching, bad breath, skin rashes and skin break outs can be early signs that the raw food diet is releasing too many toxins – acids into the blood stream. Notice that the immediate and unpleasant symptoms very often occur at the orifices of the body.

WHAT TO DO?

Temporarily slowing down the cleansing symptoms can occur with more vegetables, much less fruit and some steamed foods. It is important to understand acid and alkaline forming food balancing. Notice the kind of foods you crave and let that be a barometer for what you may need to avoid or greatly limit. The truth often hurts. The things we most like are often not so good for us. Recognizing that opens the door for things do get better.

There is much information about the raw food diet on the internet. On the surface it sounds like a great idea. One thing I can caution people about is that the proponents of the diet are often sales persons for  products that are on their websites. Some of these people have basic good intentions, but they can have another agenda that blurs their original intention to help people. Making money and helping others can be, when done in earnest, very profitable.

Here are some thought about the raw food business:

1) Raw food business owners / gurus are very often extremists who sell to other extremists– and they really know that psychology. Eating all fruit, juicing or juice feasting for 90 days, 100 raw, water fasting, etcetera. This may, at first and for short periods of time, work for some people. For most, depending on age, health history, exposure to environmental pollutants, family home, city living, etcetera, it is probably way too cleansing. It takes way, way, way more than 90 days, a colon cleanse or two to deeply improve the health of most people. It is a great door opener and it could, for a limited few, have a deep effect on their cellular health. For real healthy people this would not be the case. What do I mean by real healthy? Well formed bowels, that are very regular, do not have a bad odor, digestive complaints are none to few, have not been exposed to a bevy of environmental toxins. Get the idea? Very few people meet this description. If  you do, you are part of a very small percentage of our populatin and probably would not seek out a raw food diet in the first place!

2) Raw food entrepreneurs are younger, may have less toxins to clear and  do not know the long term repercussions of their diet choices. They may have a much lower load of heavy metal related toxins, drugs, antibiotics, and other environmental toxins to clear. Their knowledge is limited because of their years on the planet. They ARE great spokes people for selling the Raw Food Lifestyle because people feel inspired by their energy, healthy look and promise of eternal youth.

3) Many of the raw food spokes people are men and are not qualified to give advice to women of any age. Case closed. Recommending a high fruit diet to women is usually not going to work for the vast majority. It may take longer for younger women to figure this out. Yeast infections usually come with sugar addiction. These powerful cravings are a real draw to a raw diet high in fruit. The  80 /10 /10 diet  of mostly fruit is one example.  Again, it might work for some, but for how long? The addiction to sugar can really blind our choices.

4) People who define themselves Raw Food-ists and make a living from that definition, have an image to maintain. Why? Because their business is based on that identity. Most importantly this is how they make a living, and in some cases a very, very good one. Ironically, they often tell people that being 100% raw is not the best plan for most everyone. Matt Monarch is one person who says this, but implies that to be completely raw is something virtuous. Is it? He would probably deny that he implies this. See for yourself if you choose to view his many youtube videos.

There is a lot more to say here, but improving digestion is the primary component for really good health. Period. Removing heavy metals, controlling and eliminating parasites, fungal  and bacterial infections by strengthening the immune systen [aka, improving gut health] is the answer.

His Longevity Now first edition is something I am familiar with and can personally recommend as a good resource for some ideas on how to improve digestive health and begin to eliminate acidity and toxins throughout the body.

The Unique Healing Program Donna Pessin truly sums up what is necessary for better digestion and health. Ms. Pessin personally designed The Unique Healing Program over the past 25 years. Her personal journey to find better health created her program. The Unique Healing Program is an investment of time, money that is worth every minute and buck. I am in the beginning stages of learning about what she does and implementing some of her products. She has 70 + videos on Youtube.

Postscript 12/2012: Have been on The Unique Healing Program since March of 2012 and have never looked back. Investigate it and if it makes any sense to you, do yourself a favor and get on board.

Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet are worth checking out. Creating better digestive health and understanding Candida overgrowth is her main emphasis. The Unique Healing Program is the most complet answer for healing bowel and digestive problems. Hands down, this is my experience.

Get some colonics, do some enemas, look into home colonic units. Do some research. It is all for our benefit to know more.
